Student Spotlight: Anna

Anna started pole dancing at UV in 2017, but then moved to Tel Aviv in 2018. A surprise benefit to moving the UV studio online is that we got to have Anna back in our classes! Anna is a hard worker and has made incredible progress on the pole in this past year! She is always a pleasure to have in class and it is a joy to share in her successes.

Q: Where are you from?

Born and raised in Toronto but moved to Tel Aviv, Israel in July 2018.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself outside the studio.

Where to start... I am a sports and fitness junkie. Whenever I go to the gym I feel like I have entered a candy store. I used to run half marathons but had to stop due to joint pain. Sports/Fitness is my therapy and I can talk about it forever. Aside from that, I love Mafia movies and find the history of the Mafia to be fascinating. I like to paint/draw in my spare time and enjoy being outdoors as much as I can (one of the reasons why I moved to a warmer climate). I worked in the non-for-profit world for over 10 years and just recently made the switch to high tech.

Q: How long have you been pole dancing?

I went to my first pole class in November 2017 - at the UV Eglinton Studio.

Q: How did you start pole dancing?

The truth is that in October 2017 I went to Edmonton, Alberta and stayed at the Fantasyland Hotel and the room I stayed in was a "Hollywood" theme with a pole. This sparked an idea for my friend's birthday present - I treated her to a pole class in November 2017. We did it for fun - but afterwards we realized how much of a workout it was and needless to say, I was hooked.

Q: What is your favourite class and why?

This is a hard one. I thoroughly enjoy all the classes I take at UV - since I do classes virtually now it really depends on what is available in my timezone. But, I have to say, I love Pole Choreography and Spinning Pole Choreography, For tricks and technique, privates with Elisa are my jam. I really owe my progress over the last year to Elisa. The way she is able to explain tricks and moves really helps me. I tried studios here in Tel Aviv before the pandemic, and I found that I wasn't getting things as easily as I am now.

Q: What surprised you about pole fitness?

How it is a full body workout. I have been a fitness freak for years and never had such results like I do now. It is also beyond empowering . After getting my first Ayesha - I found myself walking with my head a little higher because of how proud I was of myself. I feel like a badass.

Q: Why do you love pole?

I love the community and how supportive women are of each other. I also love how the learning process in pole never ends. There is always a new move or sequence to learn. It is definitely a sport that requires a long term investment.

Q: What is your proudest pole moment?

Oh gosh there are so many. I almost cried from joy too many times. Because of my years of running - I feel like my body is like the tin man. My body is always in pain and very stiff. So I think any move where I can do a straddle on the pole is my most proud moment. Being flexible/bendy is a daily struggle and something I need to achieve.

Q: What is your favourite song/genre to dance to?

I found that my taste in music has changed slightly since starting pole. I used to be into hip/hop but now I find myself liking artists like Sam Fischer. But a good Ciara or Beyonce song always helps to get the hard tricks done.

Q: What keeps you coming back to Ultra Violet?

The instructors. I love them all. So professional and full of so much knowledge.I tried other teachers in Tel Aviv and it is just not the same. I am thankful to COVID-19 for this one reason because it allowed me to come back to UV :)

Q: Any advice to students new to pole?

Be patient and listen to your body. Basically do the opposite of me.

Allow yourself to recover - you will get stronger.

Guide to Finding the Perfect Heels

Pole dancing heels originated in strip clubs. While the height can be intimidating for some, these heels are specifically made for dancing and they can be quite comfortable. After a couple sessions  pole dancing in heels, you may never want to put on regular high heels again!

Wearing the proper heels when dancing can actually make some moves and transitions easier (although, some things are much harder!) and they can protect your toes in some advanced tricks (like kips and drop splits). They can aesthetically make the legs look longer and can change the way your body moves while dancing. Dancing in heels also has the benefit of making you feel like a badass!

You don’t NEED to wear heels to pole dance. The beauty of pole is that you can make it what you want! If you pole dance in bare feet for your entire pole journey, that is your choice. However, if you’re looking for that first pair of heels and don’t know where to start, let’s break down the choices.

Boots or Sandals?

Both are amazing!

Boots provide more ankle support and can cover the toes if you are doing floor work or more advanced tricks. However, boots will take more time to break in and are typically pricier than sandals.

Sandals can make those legs long even longer and show off beautiful lines. With Sandals, the clear plastic straps will stretch to your feet and break in faster than the harder opaque material. You will want to have a strap around the ankle to make sure the shoe stays on.

Material?

With either boots or sandals and any material, there will be wear as you slide around the floor and use them. You can get shoe covers to protect them (or DIY some using socks with the toe cut off!).

Toebox:

Getting the clear or tinted hard plastic on the toe box will not show as much wear. A chrome or painted finish on the toe box can scrape off as you do floor work.

Boot material:

  • Patent material has a lot of ankle support. It will be stiffer at first, sometimes too stiff, but can be broken in over time. This material can stick stick to the pole and enable you to climb with ease. Sliding and floor transitions will not be as simple in these as they also stick to the floor, however they can certainly be used for many aerial pole tricks and transitions.

  • Matte will move easier on the floor than the shinier material and will not scratch as quickly, but still provide great ankle support.

  • Suede are the softest fabric and allow for comfy, unrestricted movement. They slide very well on the ground (sometimes too well, more control is required at times), but they can scuff very easily.

Heel Height?

This is a comfort thing for each person, but many feel most comfortable starting in 7 inch heels and moving up to 8 inch heels after they get comfortable. 6 inch is an option to start, but many say 7 inch heels are easier to dance in than 6 inch heels!

The height is scary at first, especially if you are not used to high heels, but dancing in the right shoe will eventually feel way easier than dancing (or walking!) in normal heels. Warm up and strengthen those ankles and take it slow at first! Sign up for a class to start learning to walk in heels. Our classes 'Erotic Pole Flow’ or ‘Sensual Dance Flow’ can help to learn to dance in your heels. You can also start on the ground and put those heels on for ‘Floor Flow’!

Brand?

Pleasers is the leading brand in the market (and the brand we sell at the studio!), although there are some other quality brands that are making their way into the market. You’ll sometimes hear ‘Pleasers’ as a term used instead of “shoes”.

In any case, choose a quality brand of shoes that were made for pole dancing!

Some classic first pair of Pleasers:

Clear strap, Clear platform sandal

Black Boots

Pleasers don’t come in half sizes and it is generally better (especially with a boot) to take the next size up if you are a half size.

Ready to buy some heels? The studio puts in an order for shoes regularly. Browse the Pleasers website to find your perfect pair and then contact the studio to order it!

Student Spotlight: Cindy

IMG_9888.jpg

Cindy loves to pole dance and works hard! You have probably seen her in a class with you as she takes as many as she can! She is strong and a beautiful performer and we love having Cindy at UV!

Q: How did you start pole dancing?

I had neck pain and was seeing a chiropractor for a long time. Eventually, the chiropractor said there was nothing else that she could try. Improving upper body strength was the only way to better support my body. So I tried going to the gym, but it was too repetitive and boring. By chance, I saw a special on pole classes and gave it a try. Looking great and doing cool tricks gave me a lot of instant gratification. It was a fun way to exercise. And it worked! No more neck pain in less than a year! The rest, as they say, is history.

Q: Why do you love pole?

I love the mix of characters that I meet through pole. People from different backgrounds come together to learn something new and bring in their own flavours and skills. They inspire me to work harder and explore more.

Q: What is your favourite song/genre to dance to?

My taste changes depending on mood, but that's one of the best things about pole. You can do it in so many different styles and with different vibes.

Q: Any advice to students new to pole?

Learn a bit of everything. Pole requires strength, flexibility, handstand techniques and choreography. Training all those skills will help you pole better and safer.

What do you love sharing with your students?

I love sharing tips and experiences, as well as just overall joy and humility towards ourselves when going about our journey.
