Ruth’s spirit is infectious!
We are so happy that Ruth walked into the Carlaw studio and never looked back! She has had incredible progress along her pole journey. She is a joy to have in class and is always cheering on anyone else when they succeed (or just even try!). While Ruth will always bring out a smile (even through that hard conditioning in class), she’ll also bring out her saucy side with her alter ego, Mona Lott.
Catch her performing at the UV Showcase on Friday, February 28th! Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door.
Q: Where are you from?
I was born in England, emigrated here, for the second and last time, in 1990. I was heavily into the gothic scene in EngIand but on coming here found that I was one of the few people in Toronto with piercings and tattoos. I’ve had my nose and most of my other piercings longer than many of you have been alive!
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself outside the studio.
I basically live the life I would have scoffed at and ridiculed back in my late teens. There is still a streak of badness and I will always dance to the beat of my own drum, which you may get to see as long as it is before 10:00pm!! Check out mona_lott_burlesque on Instagram 😜
Q: How long have you been pole dancing?
I started pole dancing about 11yrs ago in Burlington but after a little less than a year i had some major life changes so I wasn’t able to pick it up again until almost 3yrs ago when I started at the Carlaw location.
Q: How did you start pole dancing?
I hated gyms and I was in a new city with no friends, I saw a small advertisement and decided to try it. Once life settled down again I was eager to head back.
Q: What is your favourite class and why?
I have a love/hate relationship with all the classes I take. However like any bad hangover you swear you’ll never do it again if you can just get out of bed, then you are back at class that evening !!
Q: What surprised you about pole fitness?
The change in my body shape and my self confidence . Gradually my waist appeared again, and OMG are those abs?!
Q: Why do you love pole?
The generosity and support from everyone I have met. I really mean EVERYONE. I have never met so many people from so many different areas come together and clap and cheer and scream for each other the way we do here.
Q: What is your proudest pole moment?
Honestly, walking into the first class. I knew I would be much older than most of the other students so I had to grab what little courage I had, pull my big girl panties up and walk in. I was greeted with big smiles and cheerful faces, amazing.
Q: What is your favourite song to dance to?
As all my instructors know it has to be rock for me, anything else causes my eyes to roll to the back of my head and my jaw to hang open. But of course I enjoy dancing to anything and enjoy the challenge.
Q: What keeps you coming back to Ultra Violet?
The quality of the instructors and the different classes available. I love all the instructors I have had and have learnt so much from each one. Other fellow students aren’t too bad as well..... JUST KIDDING!!!
Q: Any advice to students new to pole?
Three words... No one cares!!! No one cares how you look in shorts, or that you haven’t worked out in years, no one cares if you sweat or have to rest half way through a class. What people DO care about is having a lot of fun, making sure everyone is safe, they care about meeting each goal you have, big or small.
With each class you take you will only go forward.
