Student Spotlight: Jess

We’re highlighting students at UV for their dedication, hard work and the amazing pole progress they make right here at UV. Know someone that you think we should feature in Student Spotlight? Let us know at info@uvpolefitness.com.

Jess' pole progress is so inspiring!

Jess in her beloved 8 inch heels!

Jess in her beloved 8 inch heels!

She has grown so much since that first pole class and it shows in strength and confidence! She has great enthusiasm for pole dance and is such a delight to have in class. You'll likely see her in the studio dancing in those 8 inch heels! Thank you Jess for being a part of our community!

Q: Where are you from?

I'm from Toronto!

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself outside the studio.

I work in digital advertising, and when I'm not at work or the studio, I'm probably at a concert or trying out a new restaurant in Toronto. I'm obsessed with plants, and I like photography (I have 5 cameras).

Q: How long have you been pole dancing?

I started in July 2017.

Q: How did you start pole dancing?

I started a 9-5 job and realized my routine consisted of going to work, eating dinner, and then watching Netflix until I went to bed. It was time to step up my fitness, and I thought pole dancing would be a perfect combination of conditioning my body and gaining confidence.

Q: What is your favourite class and why?

I love pole flow because it's honestly so fun to dance. I have zero dance background experience, but I love the challenge of using your body as a vehicle for emotional expression while carrying your own body weight. Also, I love any excuse to wear my 8 inch heels.

Q: What surprised you about pole fitness?

The community I became a part of! I've made so many friendships at the studio, and the people are so supportive and encouraging.

Q: Why do you love pole?

Pole dancing makes me feel empowered (did I mention my 8 inch heels?). I feel my physical strength, but it's also been a catalyst for growth in myself. It's given me a reason to believe in myself, and that with true persistence and patience, progress is possible! Also, now I can flex my core, you can't see it, but you can feel it and that counts for something!

Q: What is your proudest pole moment?

When I was able to complete my first fireman spin after 6 basic classes (it felt like it took forever). But this moment serves as a reminder that I always draw back on: progress takes time; you might not land the move today, but don't give up, you'll get there.

Q: What is your favourite song to dance to?

Anything by Two Feet - typical, but it just works so well!!

Q: What keeps you coming back to Ultra Violet?

The instructors and the community. The environment is so supportive, you always feel like you have your own personal cheer squad.

Q: Any advice to students new to pole?

Progress isn't linear!

We're Saying Goodbye to UV Carlaw

Three years ago, amidst big plans and dreams, UV came across an opportunity at Studio Flux. A small but lovely, cozy studio with access to a professional circus space and more. We moved into this space and set up shop, opening up opportunities for dance, fitness, sexiness and so much more. After 3 years we have decided to close the doors to our little east-end home, and pursue bigger goals and dreams befitting of our mighty community and program. This decision was tough, but was made for the benefit of UV as a whole and is the best possible decision for us at this time. Our community is stronger than ever and growing each day and we are so grateful for the memories, laughs, workshops, dancing and most importantly the people who have made our studio their dancing home and put their journeys in the capable hands of our staff. Our greatest loss will be those who are unable to continue to visit us on the west side of the city, and for that we are sorry to be shutting down our little space.

Our final date for classes will be December 28, 2019. Please join us for a final jam at the studio as we toast the New Year and new opportunities that are coming our way.

Our Eglinton studio and UV community are not going anywhere! Your membership and class passes are still valid at Eglinton and we look forward to seeing you there.

Thank you to those who have been loyal to us during this time. It is because of you that we were able to grow.

Thank you to our staff who have made growth possible. We have the best team and they are the foundation of UV and our amazing community.

When one door closes, another one opens, and we are ready for the next door!

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at info@uvpolefitness.com.

With love,
Elisa, Owner

You are likely to run into her, as she takes a lot of classes at both locations and is extremely supportive of her fellow classmates! She performs regularly and it is a joy to watch her sexy flow and amazing tricks. Thank you Molly for taking part in growing our awesome pole community at UV!

Q: Where are you from?

Born and raised in Toronto

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself outside the studio.

I work for the Ontario Government regulating professional combative sports. I have 2 cats but really one is my baby. I crochet if anyone needs a hat.

Q: How long have you been pole dancing?

I've been pole dancing for just over 4 years

Q: How did you start pole dancing?

I went to a bachelorette party in Montreal and we did the typical bachelorette pole party which was super fun...and I was super sore after and was like damn that's a real workout. I was living in Ottawa at the time and needed a hobby so went to the local pole studio there for 2 months before moving back to Toronto and finding a home with UV.

Q: What is your favourite class and why?

I don't have a favourite class! I go to like 10 classes a week...they're all my favourites.

Q: What surprised you about pole fitness?

I was most surprised at the variety of people and styles. I thought to do pole you needed to be Jenyne Butterfly (aka my first pole video I ever saw 5 years before starting pole) when in fact you can be in any shape, any size, any place in your life and you can still learn.

Q: Why do you love pole?

I love pole because of the amazing community of people. There's a reason I have a pole at home and yet come to the studio everyday. Just awesome babes supporting awesome babes and adults making friends which seriously does not happen anywhere else.

Q: What is your proudest pole moment?

Competing on stage in 8" heels and not falling while walking off!

Q: What is your favourite song to dance to?

OHHHH LORDY THE HARDEST QUESTION EVER!!! I have no favourite song. Anything old school Weeknd. Roads by Portishead. Closer by Kings of Leon. Let's be honest - anything slow and sultry is my jam.

Q: What keeps you coming back to Ultra Violet?

The fact that its a 10 minute drive from my house? KIDDING! The amazing group of instructors that are all so unique and so amazing and once again the awesome community of people.

Q: Any advice to students new to pole?

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TRY AND DO NOT GIVE UP!!! Yes you will suck and yes it will hurt and yes someone else can always do better BUT THIS IS YOUR AMAZING JOURNEY RIDE THE PAIN TRAIN BECAUSE ITS SO WORTH IT!

Does your pole journey start with a pole party? We got you covered, whatever you’re celebrating - marriage, divorce, birthday or just your own amazing self - a pole party is a great way to get introduced to pole in a comfortable environment with your friends.

Ready to take Molly’s advice?

“DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TRY AND DO NOT GIVE UP!!! Yes you will suck and yes it will hurt and yes someone else can always do better BUT THIS IS YOUR AMAZING JOURNEY RIDE THE PAIN TRAIN BECAUSE ITS SO WORTH IT!”

Pole Studio Golden Rules

Pole Fitness is different from many other genres of dance and fitness because we draw out deep emotions, innate desires and ignite self-confidence in our sensual form of movement and motion. Pole fitness is a medley of aerial poses and base work. This ground apparatus has made foundational acrobatics and dance accessible to the average fitness seeker via conditioning, stretching, and improving coordination in our classes and workshops. UV is a welcoming studio of all identities and orientations, united by one love: dance! We support a warm, welcoming environment, encouraging all to dig deep and ignite the spark of creative movement inside. In order to maintain the integrity of our community we have some golden rules for all to abide by! Read on to join the ‘hood of open-minded positivity.

Golden Rule 1

Safety

Our first priority is safety. Pay attention to your surroundings, and respect the space and equipment. Do not try any new moves without assistance from a UV instructor. Do not attempt to alter the equipment and please respect instructions from staff.

Golden Rule 2

Treat others with respect

UV welcomes people of all denominations and orientations. Please respect those around you in our safe space where people are free to express themselves artistically. Be sure to always encourage your peers. Negativity or gossip is no benefit to anyone, so please refrain from partaking.

Golden Rule 3

Self-care

Take this rule with you wherever you go! Eat healthy, drink water, get ample rest and do you! Remember the importance of personal hygiene! Use deodorant and bring a towel for yourself if need be. The benefits to pole and aerial fitness are limitless, but they take a bit of a commitment from you to maintain a healthy mindset and lifestyle.

Golden Rule 4

Treat the studio with respect

This studio was created for you. A portion of your hard-earned dollars spent on pole classes are allotted for studio upkeep and maintenance. Help us keep your studio a cozy and happy place by putting away equipment/supplies after use, refraining from making a mess, and cleaning up after yourself if you eat in the studio to name a few. Remember that this space is yours and we work hard to keep it clean. Be sure to leave it in the state you would want to find it in.

Golden Rule 5

Share the space

Please be respectful of others around you. Be sure to inform others if you are filming yourself, remember that no equipment or supplies belong to any one person, and maintain a respectful attitude in group classes and busy settings.

Golden Rule 6

Listen to your instructor

Always listen to the instructor on duty! Your instructor has your best interests in mind and works hard to bring you amazing classes and content. Their main priority is safety. Often, instructors have to consider concerns clients may not recognize. Always respect their directions and understand that they are for your own good!

We look forward to sharing our space with you! Can’t wait to see you in class. xo
